COVERAGE DESCRIPTION:
This metadata file is a general file for all "faux covers." Because it does not have ArcView's Spatial Analyst capabilities, the KRIS Map Viewer cannot display grid layers. The same applies to ArcView users who do not have Spatial Analyst. To allow the display of grid themes in the absence of Spatial Analyst, ArcInfo is used to convert the grid to an image (generally a TIFF). The image can then be displayed in the KRIS Map Viewer, or in ArcView without the Spatial Analyst extension.

In ArcView, an image does not provide the opportunity for a legend. Therefore, a faux cover (which is typically either an ArcView Shapefile or an ArcInfo Coverage) accompanies an image with a similar filename, and exists for the sole purpose of displaying a representative legend for the image in ArcView and in the KRIS Map Viewer. In ArcView, this legend is located just below the image theme. Faux covers are composed of small polygon features, placed in an arbitrary location outside the project area. The attribute table contains information useful for making the legend (one row in the attribute table for each row in the desired legend). In the KRIS Map Viewer, the image "borrows" a legend from the faux cover (for more information on this, see the KRIS Help pages). Please see the metadata for each image layer for more specific metadata.
